Abstract: Los seres humanos han construido sociedades y tecnologías enormemente complejas, pero la mayoría de nosotros ni siquiera sabemos cómo funciona un bolígrafo o un inodoro. ¿Cómo hemos logrado tanto a pesar de entender tan poco? Los científicos cognitivos Steven Sloman y Philip Fernbach argumentan que sobrevivimos y prosperamos a pesar de nuestras deficiencias mentales porque vivimos en una rica comunidad de conocimiento. La clave de nuestra inteligencia está en las personas y las cosas que nos rodean. Estamos constantemente aprovechando la información y la experiencia almacenada fuera de nuestras cabezas: en nuestros cuerpos, nuestro entorno, nuestras posesiones y la comunidad con la que interactuamos, y por lo general ni siquiera nos damos cuenta de que lo estamos haciendo.
