Review: Tara Westover tenía diecisiete años la primera vez que puso un pie en un aula. Nacida de los sobrevivientes en las montañas de Idaho, se preparó para el fin del mundo almacenando melocotones enlatados en casa y durmiendo con su bolsa de "cabeza por las colinas". En el verano, guisaba hierbas para su madre, partera y curandera, y en el invierno recuperaba el metal en el depósito de chatarra de su padre. Su padre desconfiaba del establecimiento médico, por lo que Tara nunca vio a un médico o enfermera. Las heridas y las conmociones cerebrales, incluso quemaduras por explosiones, se trataron en casa con herboristería. La familia estaba tan aislada de la sociedad en general que no había nadie que se asegurara de que los niños recibieran una educación, y nadie que interviniera cuando un hermano mayor se volvía violento.
